🧑‍💻 What Is Pair Programming?

Pair programming is a collaborative coding technique where two programmers work together at one computer. One takes the role of the “driver”, who types and writes the code, while the other is the “navigator”, who reviews each line, thinks strategically, and offers suggestions. The two frequently switch roles to maintain balance and learning.

🤝 Why Use Pair Programming?

Pair programming is more than just working together — it’s about thinking together. This technique builds stronger code, deeper understanding, and human connection.

Here’s why it’s valuable:

🔧 Common Pair Programming Styles

There are several ways to implement pair programming, including:

  1. Driver–Navigator (traditional format)
  2. Ping-Pong (alternating roles after test-writing and implementation)
  3. Tour Guide (more experienced peer mentors the other)
  4. Backseat Navigator (navigator prompts without touching the keyboard)
